How To Teach The Left Turn | Left Turn About

The Left turn is the one exercise where we need to be able to step in front of our dog and have them stop moving forward so we can do this.

Left Turn

Begin walking your dog in the heel position. Switch the leash to your left hand about 18" from your dog's collar. Slow down and use your left hand to lightly correct your dog to maintain heel position. When your dog is in a good heeling position and is attentive to you. Place your left foot in front of the dog's front feet as you give the stay signal and say "Heel", the moment after you give the command, stop your dog's forward movement with the left hand and leash, by tugging back. When your dog stops their forward momentum, pivot to the left 90 degrees in front of the dog as you pivot use your left hand, holding the leash, to guide your dog with light bumps through the turn and say "Good" as your dog responds and continue walking in the new direction. As you are walking, place the leash back in the right hand and praise your dog by using your left hand to pet your dog's right side of their face.
